Understanding Domains

I like to think of domains/ your URL as your street address. When directing someone to you property you have to have an address for people to get to your home.

Example: The domain/ "street address" for Soul Software is: soulsoftware.co the domain for facebook is facebook.com

From there you have to pay for the property itself and for most we must the taxes to stay on the land in the area in which we live. This would be in the online world your hosting costs.

You purchase your domain/ URL from places like Godaddy.com or Namecheap.com. Then, we at Soul Software host unlimited domains for you. Your current membership includes unlimited domain hosting.

Domains are great for your business because they are simple ways to define your business.

Here's some quickie need to know things about domains:

Your Domain is yours no-one else's - NEED TO KNOW #1

Domains (a.k.a. URLs like mywebsite.com) are unique like addresses are unique. You cannot have an address that is the same as anyone else on the internet.

SUB-DOMAINS TO THE RESCUE - NEED TO KNOW #2

What's cool is that you don't have to buy a ton of domains. You can use sub-domains. I like to think of these like an apartment or condo. They have the same main address but they can more specifically point to a specific home on that lot.

The most recognizable subdomain is www. most people point www. to their main domain, so that can seem confusing, but it is considered a subdomain.

Any words with a period that come before your domain name is considered a subdomain.

Examples:
hello.soulsoftware.co

support.soulsoftware.co

or chat.soulsoftware.co

www.soulsoftware.co

We can use these subdomains to point to your funnels or different landing pages. They are especially handy when you have login specific landing pages like within memberships. We recommend that you set up your custom membership domain as a subdomain like:

login.yourawesomecourse.com

WWW does not automatically point to your root domain - NEED TO KNOW #4

Did you know that www.mywebsite.com and mywebsite.com are not actually the same URL? When you add your domain within the app, you will be able to choose which one you want to be the root domain. Then within your registrar account (where you just were), you will need to add a redirect so that the non-root domain redirects to the root domain you selected within the app.

In other words, if you add www.mywebsite.com as a domain to the app, head into your registrar and set up a redirect for mywebsite.com to send all traffic to www.mywebsite.com.

That way, no matter which one somebody types in, they will end up at the right spot! Here's a few helpful articles to set that up:
